    Studies have demonstrated that PCV7 is efficacious for the prevention of invasive (invasive pneumococcal disease [IPD]) and all-cause pneumonia (Grijalva et al., 2007; Whitney et al., 2006). PCV7 also decreased the rates of carriage and the rates of antibiotic non-susceptible vaccine serotypes among children under 2 years of age by 2003, and a non-susceptible phenotype has often been associated with recurrent disease and unresponsive treatment (Dagan et al., 2003; Hampton et al., 2012; Jones et al., 2010). However, vaccine use modified the epidemiology of pneumococcal disease and colonization, and further investigations documented an increase in the rates of carriage and infections caused by non-PCV7 serotypes (Rosen et al., 2011).
